My favourite merge tools
I have included commands for TortoiseGit here but with minor adjustments they should apply to most VCS tools:
Diff viewer: C:\Program Files\Perforce\p4merge.exe %base %mine
Merge tool: C:\Program Files\Perforce\p4merge.exe %base %theirs %mine %merged
Windows 8.1 - won't upgrade if you move your profile directory
The biggest challenge I had was finding where all my application list went. I finally found the subtle arrow below the first column of icons that will give you your full "Programs" list. I must say I do like that they merged the search. It was driving me nuts typing in "settings" related commands and having to then click on the settings search to see them.

Programming competition
It has been about 10 years since I competed in a computing competition and couldn't resist the opportunity when Infusion decided to kick one off this past weekend. I managed to have a few answers accepted which was good. I also managed to keep focused on one thing for 5 hours which rarely happens these days and was somewhat refreshing. Did I win? Definitely not, though I did remind myself how it feels to be under pressure to solve logic problems and the winning feeling when the answer is accepted. That winning feeling is something that on my current engagements can take weeks or months to savor.

Skills Canada 2013 in Vancouver
Well it is that time of year again and I am about to hop on a plane to Vancouver for the 19th annual competitions for Canadian youth from across the country. You can see the event details on the Skills Canada website. The event takes place all day is at BC Place on June 6th and 7th. I am involved in the IT Systems Administration competition where competitors are required to demonstrate expertise in constructing and managing a basic computer network and related infrastructure for a small to medium sized business.
